Open Question: Can you be given a general discharge from the Air Force for behavioral problems related to depression?

by Martin Edelstrom on January 20, 2010

My brother has been in the AF for 2 years, and about 4 months ago started having serious sleeping pattern issues and had a string of days where he was significantly late to work. He was reprimanded several times (lost stripes, extra duty). About a month ago they actually admitted him on suicide watch and diagnosed him with depression. He was put on medication for this and for his insomnia and 2 weeks afterhe came back to work, he was sent to work at squadron headquarters and told they had submitted the paperwork for a general discharge. It has been 2 weeks and he has not heard anything else about it. Can they give him a general discharge for the issues with being late since the insomnia was related to the depression diagnosis and he is now being treated? Would he receive any benefits?
