Open Question: My teenager won’t take medicine?

by Martin Edelstrom on October 7, 2009

My oldest daughter is 17 years old, and she will not take medication. She's struggled with chronic migraines for the past seven years, one constant headache that lasts all day every day. Sometimes they get so bad she sees spots or throws up. Thus far, medicines have not worked. She's had MRI testing and PET scans, but the doctors have not yet found the problem. She has also had insomnia for many years now, she seems to function fairly well. However there are times when she will go with only a few hours of sleep over the course of many nights, and nights when she does not sleep at all. She won't take sleep medication because she doesn't like the way it makes her feel. She also recently told me that she does not want to go to any more doctors because she can 'cope with them just fine.' What should I do?
